A NAPPI® code is a unique identifier for a given pharmaceutical, medicinal, surgical, medical appliance and healthcare consumable product that enables the electronic transfer of information throughout the entire healthcare delivery chain.
This coding system has been in use within the South African electronic healthcare reimbursement industry since the early 1990s and continues to be implemented by industry consensus.
While tariff codes serve as the standard for electronic information exchange in the private healthcare industry for procedure and consultation claims, NAPPI® codes serve as the standard for pharmaceutical, medicinal, surgical, medical appliance and healthcare consumable products.
MediKredit is responsible for the day-to-day management of the NAPPI® file and to make it available in the public domain. The South African public domain NAPPI® file has been available free of charge since the inception of NAPPI® as a coding standard. The public domain file contains information on the NAPPI® code, product description, strength (if applicable), pack size and manufacturer.
Product information that is not available in the public domain is available from MediKredit on subscription.
The NAPPI® trademark is proprietary to MediKredit. The allocation of a NAPPI® code by MediKredit does not however serve as an endorsement or accreditation of the product in question by MediKredit.
